Empadronamiento: why registering at the town hall is essential
The empadronamiento is much more than a formality. It is the key to public healthcare, local benefits and school enrolment for your children.

What is the empadronamiento?
The empadronamiento (or inscripción en el padrón municipal) is the compulsory registration on the municipal population register of your town in Spain. It is required of all residents, regardless of nationality, as soon as they settle in Spain — even for stays shorter than 3 months.
It is often the first procedure to carry out after finding accommodation, as it is a precondition for most others.
Why is it so important?
- SIP card: access to a GP and the public health system
- School enrolment for children: required to enrol your children in a public school
- EU Residency Certificate: required for registration at the Registro de Extranjeros
- Local social benefits: allowances, transport discounts, housing assistance
- Right to vote in local elections for EU citizens
- Proof of address accepted by most government bodies
Required documents
- Valid passport or identity card
- Proof of address: signed lease, property deed, or a declaration from the person hosting you with their identity document
- NIE (recommended but not always compulsory depending on the municipality)
How to carry out the procedure
Go to the Ayuntamiento (town hall) or the citizen service office (OAC). In large cities, online appointment booking is often mandatory. In small municipalities, you can often just walk in. The volante de empadronamiento (provisional certificate) is issued on the day.
Validity
The registration itself has no expiry date, but the certificado de empadronamiento has a 3-month validity for use in administrative procedures. You can request a new one at any time from the town hall, usually free of charge.
Deregistering when leaving Spain
If you leave Spain permanently, it is advisable to deregister from the padrón municipal (baja en el padrón). This avoids tax problems and simplifies procedures in your home country. For Belgians, deregistering in Spain should be accompanied by a notification to your Belgian municipality to reactivate your registration.
